\nAre Implants Safe and How Long will they Last?
\n\n\n\nImplants are a safe and well-established treatment. It is probably true to say that implants, like natural teeth, will last as long as you take care of them. How you take care of your implants – and whether you go to your regular maintenance appointments – will have the greatest impact on their lifespan.
\n\n\n\nIf you don’t take care of your implants, they will develop a coating similar to what you get on neglected natural teeth. Left untreated, this can lead to gum infection, bleeding, pain, and general discomfort. You could have all these problems with natural teeth.
\n\n\n\nIf your implants are well maintained and the bone to which they are adapted is strong and healthy, you can expect them to last for many years. However, just like with other surgical implants (such as a hip replacement), there is no lifetime warranty.
\n\n\n\nCan Implants Always be Used to Replace Missing Teeth?
\n\n\n\nIt depends on the condition of the bone in your jaw. Your dentist will organize a number of special tests to determine the amount of bone still present. If there is not enough or if it is not healthy enough, it may not be possible to place implants without grafting the bone in the area first.
\n\n\n\nDo Implants Hurt?
\n\n\n\nImplant placement is often easier than removing a tooth and is usually done using simple local anesthesia. You will not feel any pain at this time but, just like after an extraction, you may feel some discomfort for the week following surgery.
\n\n\n\nSometimes your dentist can give you a sedative if you are very nervous or if the case is complicated. General anesthetics are rarely used for implants and are generally only used for very complicated cases.
\n\n\n\nHow long does the Treatment Take?
\n\n\n\nYour Dental team can give you an approximate schedule before the start of Treatment. Some false teeth can now even be fitted at the same time as the implants (they are called “immediate implants”). Check with your dental team to see if these are right for you. Usually, the false teeth are mounted 3 to 4 months after the placement of the implants. Sometimes the treatment takes longer and your dental team can talk to you about the duration of your Treatment.
\n\n\n\nWhat about Aftercare?
\n\n\n\nYour Dental team will give you instructions on how to take care of your Implant. They can give you Painkillers after the Surgery – or make sure you have some at home – to take over in the next few days if you need it.
\n\n\n\nWhat Happens Next After dental implants treatment?
\n\n\n\nOnce your Implants are Placed, the bone of your jaw must grow on them and merge with them. It Usually takes a Few Months. Sometimes the Implants can be Stable Enough when Placed so that the False Teeth are Installed Sooner than that.
\n\n\n\nIf you Need to Replace one, two, or three teeth, you may have a Temporary Denture in the Meantime. If you Already have Complete Dentures, you can continue to wear them while your Implants are Healing. Your Prostheses will need to be modified to fit Properly after surgery and a “Healing Cap” will usually be placed over the Implant site to Protect it.

\n\n\n\nNo. But the follow-up is Important if you want to have a Successful and Durable Implant. Your Dental Team Should give you Detailed Advice on how to care for your Implants. Cleaning around the Teeth Attached to the Implants is no more Difficult than Cleaning the Natural Teeth. However, there may be Hard-to-Reach areas and you will be shown how to clean them. You may need to visit your Hygienist more often, but your Dental Team can talk to you about it.
\n\n\n\nIf I had gum disease when I had my own teeth, will I get it with the Implants?
\n\n\n\nYes, if you don’t care about it well enough. If you keep them clean and have them Regularly Checked by your Dental Team, you should have no problem. Smoking also Affects the health of implants. So if you smoke, you may need to take more care of your implants. Some dentists will not place dental implants in smokers.
\n\n\n\nCan I take the Teeth out if they are Fixed to Implants?
\n\n\n\nMost teeth attached to implants can only be fitted and removed by the dentist. However, if you have removable dentures attached to the implants, you can remove them to clean them.
\n\n\n\nWhat if I have an Accident?
\n\n\n\nhave accident implants and the teeth they support can be damaged by an accident in the same way as natural teeth. It is therefore important that you wear a professionally made mouthguard if you practice sports involving contact or moving objects.

\n\n\n\nHowever, if the titanium implant itself is irreparably damaged, it can be safely left in the jaw if it is too difficult to remove. Another implant can be installed next to replace the damaged one.

It Happens Very Rarely. If the Implant Becomes Detached During the Healing Period, or Immediately after, it is Easily Removed and your jaw will heal Normally. Once your jaw is Healed, another Implant can be Placed there. Or the Dentist can make a Bridge, Adapting it to the Successful Implanted False Teeth.
